Business
If I would've known how advantageous and lucrative the industry truly was, I may have (more like definitely would have) sought out a company and gotten involved sooner than later. But, one of my favorite sayings is, "the teacher will appear when the student is ready." When I was introduced to the profession of network marketing, as a sophomore in college majoring in social studies, I certainly was not ready. A seed was planted, though, that I could actually be in business for myself but not by myself. It wasn't until after college, at the start of my teaching and coaching career, that I was really open to looking and learning more. Here are seven reasons why I chose network marketing in my mid-20s: 1. It was something simple that I could see myself doing. When my older brother first introduced me, the method of sharing the information he shared with me seemed simple enough. When my close friend invited me to look at the second company (a few years later) I ever looked at, it dawned on me that this was something I had actually been doing my whole life. I remember saying to myself: if he can do it, I can do it. 2. Someone was willing to teach me. The fact that there was someone, who had experience and integrity, and was willing to teach me, was huge. And not just teach me, but put his arm around me and mentor me. I was told: if you take a step, I'll take two. Seeing that type of support was pivotal for me as I considered the option of getting started. I will forever be grateful for being told the truth, so I could develop the right expectations. 3. I could do it part-time. At that time, I thought I was the busiest person on the planet, until I met some people who were married and juggling school, careers, and children, all at the same time, while enjoying the perks and benefits of network marketing. This showed me just how much free time I truly had. So, I decided to use that time to build a business. 4. I desperately needed the personal growth and development program (but I didn't know it). Being a male, with an ego, thinking I knew more than I really knew, I thought I had it all figured out. The reality was: I was stagnant and stuck. I found out that in order to add value to people, you first have to value people. Then, you have to become more valuable, yourself. That said, I was taught how to be intentional about feeding my mind daily. In turn, it has left a profound impact on me in every area of my life. 5. It was the first time anyone invited me to participate in something much bigger than myself. This brought something fresh to my life. It was invigorating and exciting. It gave me a larger vision for my life and encouraged me to begin thinking of ways I could positively impact more people. I started dreaming again, and that was fun for me. I learned that we are all in the people business, and we have a chance to participate in something special when we build relationships with positive, like-minded people. 6. I was open to earning extra money. I had a college degree and a good job, but I will admit: I had very poor financial literacy at the time. I had no concept of delayed gratification and paid no mind to living below my means, saving, investing, and most importantly, giving. Still, after seeing what Uncle Sam was keeping when I checked my pay stub twice a month, I was open to learning how to make more money without trading a lot more of my time for it. 7. I wasn't getting any younger. I've never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I was smart enough to know that I had some freedom and flexibility at this stage of my life that I wouldn't have when I got married and started a family. So although I didn't have a large network or much credibility at a younger age, I didn't think that was an excuse to not get started when I saw a group of leaders and a company I could partner with. Until I was properly introduced, I honestly thought in order to be in business for yourself you had to have a dump truck load of cash capital lying around, you had be really smart with a business degree under your belt, etc... Network marketing truly opened my eyes to a new way thinking about doing business. Someone like me: a young guy, from a small town, with no prior experience, and no money, could start a business, earn while I learned, and be successful. Ultimately, I had questions and concerns, just like the next person. But, I was taken through a process where I could understand what was happening, and how. This allowed me to receive enough information to make and educated decision. It was one of the best decisions of my life. It allowed me to capitalize on two major trends: health and wellness and home-based business. Network marketing is not the end-all, be-all for me... And it frustrates me when some people press, poke, and pry on others, making them feel as if it should be that way for them. I believe in sharing and caring, meeting people where they're at, listening to how I can help, presenting the facts and the truth, allowing folks to take whatever position they want to take on the team, and helping them reach their goals. If you decide to take the plunge, I look forward to hearing about your growth and success. There's plenty of room at the top for people just like you, and we're just getting started. Not to mention, we're having a blast, too! Let's grow. Love you guys. JT
